Irwin Rappaport , MD
A native New Yorker, Dr. Irwin Rappaport received his B.S. Degree from Columbia University College of Pharmacy. Following a fellowship appointment in pharmaceutical research at the University of Wisconsin, and marriage to his future practice partner, Barbara, Dr. Rappaport enlisted in the United States Army during the Korean War. After an Honorable Discharge, he used his GI Bill to partly finance medical school education at the Medical College of Virginia (Barbara working to keep bill collectors away while raising their 6 month and two year old sons.) His graduation from medical school started a long set of career accomplishments:
  • Internship in Internal Medicine at Bellevue Hospital, New York
  • Residency in Pediatrics at New York Presbyterian Hospital (Cornell)
  • Fellowship in Allergy & Immunology at St. Vincent's Hospital & Medical Center
  • Appointment as Assistant Director of Pediatrics at the New York Polyclinic Hospital
  • Director of Nurseries at French Hospital, New York City
  • Founder and Director of Research of the Section of Allergy and Immunology, Department of Pediatrics, New York Presbyterian Hospital (Cornell)
  • Founder and Training Program Director of the Allergy and Immunology Fellowship Program, Department of Pediatrics, NY Presbyterian Hospital (Cornell).
  • Physician-in-Charge of the Allergy/Immunology Clinic, Department of Pediatrics, NY Presbyterian Hospital (Cornell).

Believing that there is no greater virtue being a physician than caring for patients, Dr. Rappaport opened his practice for the specialty of Allergy and Immunology for all ages, and the primary care of Pediatrics in 1965. Since teaching and research are intrinsic to keeping medically current, Dr. Rappaport balanced patient practice with his duties (above) as Clinical Professor of Pediatrics, New York Weill Medical Center (Cornell Medical College), training young future Allergists and Immunologists and doing basic and clinical research. He has published over 24 professional articles in major medical journals and has edited several books on medical subjects.
